Karla M Santos was born in Brazil in the early 80's and soon after immigrated with her mother to an upper middle class suburb across the water from San Francisco. As a result of being socially, economically and linguistically caught in-between two cultures she found herself observing social situations from a far. Her work is playful, dark humored and most often deals with isolationism.
In May of 2007 Karla received a BFA in Theater with an emphasis in Mixed Media from Cornish College of the Arts. With this she intends on revitalizing the contemporary format of theater, by blending installation, video, performance art, photography, and theater into one story. As well as emphasizing the relationship between art and it's patrons. Karla's work is never complete until the work is inspected, played with or thrown away by a third party. Karla's installations attempt to create awkward circumstances to evoke an authentic reaction. She's most interested in people: the individual in relation to the group. She enjoys testing the relationship between human emotions against logic, as well as exploring primal reaction coming into conflict with socialization.
